Hi, I’m Kathleen Goodman and I’ve been practicing as a counselor since 2009. I spent ten years working with children and adolescents as a school counselor in both Tennessee and Washington. I’ve worked at all levels- elementary, middle, and high school. I enjoyed the energy and community schools create and loved helping students gain confidence inside and outside of the classroom. In addition to serving as school counselor, I was also involved in coaching girls cross country and soccer.
As a former athlete myself, I’m particularly attuned to the performance expectations many athletes experience. I’ve supported athletes struggling with body image and perfectionism as well as managing anxiety during high profile games and tournaments. Although I’ve hung up my soccer cleats, my love for running has only grown. When I’m not running the Beltline or Chattahoochee trails, you might find me volunteering with Girls on the Run. I’ve been involved with this organization in 4 different states since 2002!
Since children and families played such an integral role in my past experience, I have specialized training in Play Therapy and Emotionally Focused Family Therapy. I believe in the therapeutic power of play and use various play-based activities to help children express their feelings, problem solve, adopt greater mind-body awareness, and integrate social skills. I have found play therapy to be particularly helpful for children experiencing health anxiety as it gives them a safe space to express their worries about health in a way that may be difficult to articulate verbally.
Additionally, through my volunteer work with Gilda’s Club Nashville and Seattle, I have supported children, adolescents, and families touched by cancer. You can find games, art supplies, books, and dolls in my playroom! Speaking of books, not only do I love reading books but I’m also a published author! I wrote All Families Invited in 2019 and have been so excited to share my book with local schools and libraries.
I enjoy supporting women of all ages. Whether it's navigating grief and loss, caring for aging parents, balancing the demands at home and at work, or coping with hormonal changes and menopause, I bring a compassionate and empowering approach towards treating women's issues so my clients walk away feeling seen, valued, and heard. I also have extensive experience working with individuals and families who are hoping to conceive or adopt, who are pregnant, who are in their first year as new parents as well as those who might be struggling with infertility or perinatal grief and loss. With over 50 hours of specialized training in perinatal anxiety and mood disorders, I believe in a holistic approach encompassing the physical, psychological, and emotional aspects of the journey to parenthood. A great deal of my work encompasses the identity shift that happens from self as individual to self as parent. I draw upon my extensive background and training in attachment theory to promote positive attachment and bonding between caregiver and child.
As a therapist, I strive to create an open, collaborative space where clients feel comfortable expressing emotions and exploring aspects of their identity. Drawing from different modalities such as Attachment Theory, Emotionally Focused Family Therapy, and Play Therapy, I weave together skill-building strategies that incorporate mindfulness, interpersonal communication, and emotional regulation so clients walk away with increased confidence, self-compassion, and motivation for growth.
